3 Factors to Consider When Making a Dog Kennel

While most dog owners would prefer letting their pets stay indoors, sometimes it may be difficult especially if you have a large dog. For this reason, building a dog house in the backyard becomes the next best thing.

Just like any structure, you would need to create a dog house plan to ensure that you get it right, and exactly the way you want it. Here are the basic things you need to keep in mind:

1. Location

Depending on which part of the world you live in, it is important to ascertain your dog will be safe and comfortable in his dog house. For example, if you live somewhere cold, then it is recommended that you provide a heated dog house, or some form of insulation to keep him warm. There are heated beds you can purchase which are designed especially for pets. On the other hand, if your location is very warm, you can always put ventilation and place it in an area where there are trees or at least, shade. If you have more money to burn, you can always opt for air-conditioned dog houses, which is ideal for areas with temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Now, if you are concerned that other animals and critters may harm your pet, you can choose to build a dog house that has a magnetic door; that way, you will be sure only your pet gets to enter.

2. Size

Naturally, you want to make sure your dog will actually fit in his house, in a way that is not too tight and not too roomy either. It should be spacious enough for him to turn around and stretch his body. But if you want to be more generous, you can always decide to build him a dog mansion, although it is not really necessary.

3. Material

What type of material do you want the dog house to be made of? In the past, only wooden dog houses were available, but today, you can find plastic, steel, and PVC materials already. There are ready-made materials complete with paint, which only requires to be assembled. On the other hand, you can also choose start-from-scratch materials wherein you need to work on everything, from the ground up.

Tips to Help Your Pet Adjust to his New Home

Yes, it might be difficult especially if he has been used to staying indoors with you. But you can always work your way around it, and in the end, convince him to adapt to a new environment. Do it little by little. You can start by placing his meals in his new home because then he would not have a choice but to go inside so he can eat. Next, you may want to put toys and treats so that he will think it is a fun idea to go there and the experience will make it more enjoyable for him instead of being scary. In no time, he will adjust and learn to be comfortable in his newly built abode.
